  • 1/2 cup low-fat milk
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cup warm water
  • 5 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

How to Make Basic White Bread

    Step 1
  • Place milk, sugar, salt, and butter into a small sauce pan. Heat over low heat until butter melts and sugar disolves. Cool to lukewarm.
  • Step 2
  • Dissolve yeast in warm water in warmed mixer bowl. Add lukewarm milk mixture and 4 1/2 cups of flour. Attatch bowl and PowerKnead Spiral Dough hook to mixer.
  • Step 3
  • Turn on speed 2 and mix for about 1 minute. Continuing on Speed 2, add remaining flour 1/2 a cup at a time, and mix about 1 and 1/2 minutes or until dough starts to clean sides of the bowl. Knead on Speed 2 for 2 minutes longer, or until dough is smooth and elastic. Dough will be slightly sticky to the touch.
  • Step 4
  • Place dough in greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover. Let rise in warm place, free from draft for 1 hor, or until dough is doubled in bulk.
  • Step 5
  • Punch dough down and divide in half (if disired). Shape each half into a loaf, and place in greased baking pans (if disired). Cover. Let rise in warm place free from draft, for 1 hour, or wuntil doubled in bulk.
  • Step 6
  • Bake at 400°F for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from pans immediatly and cool on wired racks.
