  • 60 g Butter
  • 100-150 g Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 120 g Plain flour
  • 30 g Cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp Baking powder (or baking soda)
  • 90 ml Buttermilk (or 80 ml Milk + 10 ml Vinegar)
  • 90 ml Hot water

How to Make Chocolate cake

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 11 steps you must follow to make Chocolate cake in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • This is the ingredients. If you don't have buttermilk, mix milk and vinegar before measuring other ingredients. (Or simply use milk/yogurt.). If you prefer strong cocoa flavour, use baking powder rather than baking soda.
  • Step 2
  • Spread oil in a cake tin. Preheat oven at 170℃.
  • Step 3
  • Soften butter with room temperature (or use microwave low power for 1 minute). Put butter and half sugar into a bowl and mix well.
  • Step 4
  • Add eggs and rest of sugar and mix until smooth.
  • Step 5
  • Shift flour, cocoa powder and baking powder together into the bowl in two additions, alternating with buttermilk.
  • Step 6
  • Add hot water bit by bit and mix well.
  • Step 7
  • Pour the batter into a cake tin. Bake it in the 170℃ oven for 35-40 minutes.
  • Step 8
  • Check with a stick, if it's dry, it's done! (or touch sponge lightly if it bounce back.) Once it's cooled down, enjoy with your favourite icing!
  • Step 9
  • Here is my favourite icing with this chocolate cake. [Cream cheese icing] 100g Cream cheese 30g Butter 30g Icing sugar
  • Step 10
  • It's good with some berries too! [Mascarpone icing] 150g Mascarpone 20g Icing sugar
  • Step 11
  • For chocolate lovers... [Chocolate icing] 100g Cream cheese 50g Icing sugar 30g Butter 20g Cocoa powder
