  • 750 grams white fish fillets, e.g. haddock, hake, cod, etc....
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 medium onion, roughly chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 large pinch of white pepper
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 3 tbsp dry white breadcrumbs, for coating
  • 1 oil, for frying

How to Make Fish Cakes

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 10 steps you must follow to make Fish Cakes in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • Wipe the fish with damp kitchen paper.
  • Step 2
  • Sprinkle the fish with the salt and leave in a cool place for 30 minutes.
  • Step 3
  • Cut the fish into pieces and mince with the chopped onions.
  • Step 4
  • Mix together the oil, pepper, parsley, egg and water in a large bowl.
  • Step 5
  • Add the minced fish and onion and the 3 tablespoons of bread crumbs and mix very thoroughly. The mixture should be stiff enough to hold its shape; if note, then work a little more water or more breadcrumbs if necessary.
  • Step 6
  • With wet hands, form the mixture into balls, then flatten them a little.
  • Step 7
  • Coat the fish cake with breadcrumbs and refrigerate until ready to fry.
  • Step 8
  • Heat enough oil to cover the base of a frying pan and when it's sizzling hot, fry the cakes in batches for 5-6 minutes each side until golden and cooked through.
  • Step 9
  • Serve hot with chips or creamed potatoes, or cold with salad.
