Prepare the ingredients before making Gumbo in your home. Then, follow these steps below to serve Gumbo for your family or friends.

Ingredients: Gumbo

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 2/3 cup flour
  • 3 clove garlic (diced)
  • 1/2 bunch celery
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 green bellpepper
  • 1 tbsp Tabasco
  • 1 tbsp Tony Cachere's
  • 1/2 cup parsley
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 2 tsp Old Bay
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 2 packages frozen okra- thawed (10 oz packs)
  • 2 lb chicken breast
  • 5 lb shrimp
  • 1 lb clams
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 3 cup shrimp stock
  • 2 cup clam juice
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onion

How to Make Gumbo

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 4 steps you must follow to make Gumbo in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • Melt butter in a big saucepan over low heat. Add the flour and stir constantly, cook about 30- 45 minutes on low until the color becomes carmel colored. This is a Roux (roo) it thickens and adds a nutty flavor.
  • Step 2
  • Add the pepper, garlic, celery, and onions. Fry until it becomes translucent. Or add everything except seafood to crockpot.
  • Step 3
  • Add in the okra and the remaining ingredients. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and boil over medium-low heat until thick for one hour. Or you can cook in a crockpot on high for 5 hours and add the seafood the last hour.
  • Step 4
  • Before you serve the dish, don't forget to remove the bay leaf. Serve with rice. I used Tony Cachere's dirty rice and it was really good.
