  • 3/4 lb. ground beef (350 g)
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 1/2 green bell pepper
  • 1 stalk celery
  • 1 clove garlic (optional)
  • 1/2 jalapeño or other spicy chili (optional)
  • 2/3 cup ketchup (150 ml)
  • Salt & pepper
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon or yellow mustard
  • 1/4 tsp cumin (optional)
  • 4 hamburger buns

How to Make Homemade Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 7 steps you must follow to make Homemade Sloppy Joe Sandwiches in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • Prep the ingredients: Finely chop the onion, bell pepper and celery. Mince hot chili and garlic if using.
  • Step 2
  • In a large frying pan or sauce pan, add beef, vegetables, garlic and chili pepper and sauté on medium. You shouldn't need any oil because the fat and liquid from beef will be enough.
  • Step 3
  • Cook for 10 minutes or so, until the beef has browned completely and the water from the vegetables has evaporated. Drain out any excess oil from the meat.
  • Step 4
  • Add the rest of the ingredients - ketchup, mustard, salt & pepper, sugar, cumin, and Worcestershire sauce - and mix well.
  • Step 5
  • Cover and let simmer on low for 10-15 minutes so the flavors soak right into the meat. Stir occasionally.
  • Step 6
  • It's ready once the sauce has thickened up!
