  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 5 cups cooked diced potatoes
  • 1 quart half and half
  • 1 cup chicken broth (made from knorr homestyle stock)
  • 3 (6 1/2 oz) cans minced clams or 3 (6 1/2 ounce) cans chopped clams
  • 1 cup clam juice
  • Chopped Italian parsley
  • to taste Fresh lemon juice
  • Hot pepper sauce
  • Salt

How to Make New England Clam Chowder

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 10 steps you must follow to make New England Clam Chowder in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • Fry bacon until crisp
  • Step 2
  • Remove bacon, set aside to be used later
  • Step 3
  • Add butter to bacon grease, when melted add onions and saute until golden

  • Stir in flour and cook over low heat 5 minutes, stirring constantly
  • Step 5
  • Stir in pepper and thyme
  • Step 6
  • Add chicken broth, half and half, and potatoes
  • Step 7
  • Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, stirring frequently, about 5 minutes. (Be careful and watch that it doesn't cook above a simmer or very long! )
  • Step 8
  • Add clams, clam juice, parsley; simmer another 5 minutes; stirring occasionally.
  • Step 9
  • Add lemon juice, pepper sauce, and salt to taste
  • Step 10
  • Serve with oyster crackers
