  • 1 bunch Scallions, garlic chives, or green onions
  • 200 g Flour
  • 1 Egg
  • 600 ml Water
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 4-5 g Katsuo-bushi bonito flakes (optional)
  • 2-3 Tbsp oil for frying, sesame is recommended
  • Spicy Sauce:
  • 1 clove Garlic, grated
  • 1 tsp Chinese chili bean paste or other spicy sauce "Toubanjan" 豆板醤
  • 2 tsp Soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 2 tsp Miso paste
  • 2 tsp Sesame oil

How to Make Scallion Pancakes ("Chijimi") with spicy dipping sauce

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 11 steps you must follow to make Scallion Pancakes ("Chijimi") with spicy dipping sauce in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • Make your dipping sauce by mixing grated garlic, spicy bean paste, soy sauce, sugar, miso, and sesame oil.
  • Step 2
  • Add sesame seeds to sauce if you wish.
  • Step 3
  • Cut scallions/chives into 2-3 cm pieces.
  • Step 4
  • In a mixing bowl, add 200g flour, 1 egg, 1/2 tsp salt and 600 ml water. Whisk until well mixed. The batter should end up pretty runny.
  • Step 5
  • Add katsuo-bushi/bonito flakes to the bowl if you have them.
  • Step 6
  • Stir scallions/chives into batter.
  • Step 7
  • Mix batter well.
  • Step 8
  • Heat half oil for frying on medium high heat in a big frying pan. Pour in half the batter and fry until bottom starts to brown.
  • Step 9
  • Flip to other side and continue frying until browned. Remove pancake and cook the rest of the batter the same way.
  • Step 10

  • *For a simpler sauce, mix 1 clove grated garlic, 4 tsp ground sesame seeds, 4 tsp sesame oil, and 4 Tbsp soy sauce. This goes well with mayonnaise :)
