Ingredients: shrimp gumbo

  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3 lb raw medium size shrimp
  • 1 cup sliced kielbasa sausage
  • 1 cup cooked chicken breast cut into pieces
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 1 large green pepper, chopped
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 3 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 quart seafood stock or chicken stock
  • 28 oz can diced tomatoes
  • 1 tsp louisiana hot sauce
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp creole seasoning
  • 1 chopped green onion

How to Make shrimp gumbo

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 8 steps you must follow to make shrimp gumbo in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • chop vegetables; set aside
  • Step 2
  • in large pot heat oil; add flour and stir constantly to make the roux
  • Step 3
  • when roux is caramel colored add chopped vegetables and stir well until soft (about 6-7 min)
  • Step 4
  • add 1-2 cups of broth to roux and stir until smooth
  • Step 5
  • add tomatoes, stock, garlic, chicken, sausage and seasoning (dont add green onion)
  • Step 6
  • bring to a boil then reduce heat to low. simmer uncovered for about an hour stirring gently every 15 min.
  • Step 7
  • add the shrimp and simmer 15-20 min or until shrimp is done
  • Step 8
  • serve over rice and sprinkle chopped green onions on top for flavor and garnish
