Ingredients: Sourdough Starter

  • 3 packages dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp instant potato flakes

How to Make Sourdough Starter

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 8 steps you must follow to make Sourdough Starter in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water, then feed with warm water, sugar, and potato flakes.
  • Step 2
  • Let mixture stand all day, loosely covered, then refrigerate 2 to 5 days
  • Step 3
  • Take it out, feed of again with 1 cup warm water, 3/4 cup sugar and 3 Tbsp instant potato flakes.
  • Step 4
  • Again, let it sit out all day or overnight (8 - 12 hours), loosely covered.
  • Step 5
  • Now you are ready to pour off 1 cup starter to use in making the first batch of bread.
  • Step 6
  • Store the rest on the refrigerator, feeding every 3 to 5 days.
  • Step 7
  • If not making bread after feeding starter, give or throw away 1 cup.
  • Step 8
  • It may be fed 2 or 3 times before using for bread.
