  • 1 preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • 1 frozen deep dish pie crust (9")
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 fresh eggs
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cup buttermilk (i use 1% low fat)
  • 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter (salted is ok)
  • 1 zest and juice of 1 small lemon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg

How to Make Texas Buttermilk Pie

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 5 steps you must follow to make Texas Buttermilk Pie in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • Beat together sugar and eggs until mixture is light yellow in color.
  • Step 2
  • Add in flour and mix to combine well.
  • Step 3
  • Add buttermilk, melted butter, lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla extract to the mixture. Mix to combine well. You can substitute 2 teaspoons of bottled lemon juice if you don't have a lemon.
  • Step 4
  • Pour mixture into frozen pie crust. Sprinkle grated nutmeg on top of pie. Bake at 350°F approximately 40-50 minutes. Depending on your oven it may takes a little longer. Check at 40 minutes. Custard will be done when a wooden toothpick comes out clean when inserted.
  • Step 5
  • There is no substitute for the buttermilk in this recipe. If not using a deep dish pie crust, this will probably make 2 regular pies. Enjoy.
