Ingredients: Volcano Potatoes... Bacon & Cheddar

  • Volcano
  • 3 lb potatoes
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 lb bacon, thin sliced
  • 1 tbsp 1-3 tbl. milk
  • Lava
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream
  • 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 red food color( roughly 15 drops I didn't really count)

If you have prepared the ingredients needed, now time to start cooking. There are 22 steps you must follow to make Volcano Potatoes... Bacon & Cheddar in your home by yourself.

    Step 1
  • fry bacon until just under crispy to crispy.. no soggy bacon for this recipe.
  • Step 2
  • place bacon on paper towel lined plate and set aside.
  • Step 3
  • peel, wash, and chunk potatoes.
  • Step 4
  • place potatoes in a 3qt. pan. fill with cold water to about 2 inches from the top.
  • Step 5
  • boil potatoes until soft but can still hold its shape. u don't want mushy soggy potatoes.
  • Step 6
  • rinse potatoes under cold water until cooled but still warm.
  • Step 7
  • mash potatoes with milk and salt using a beater or potato masher until creamy but not runny. adjust milk add needed.
  • Step 8
  • preheat oven to 350°
  • Step 9
  • spoon out potatoes into a 9 inch pie plate.
  • Step 10
  • form potatoes into a mound shaped like a volcano. leave a 1/2 inch space around the edges for a place for the lava to go.
  • Step 11
  • make a hole in center of potato mound for the lava.
  • Step 12
  • arrange bacon vertically to cover entire outside of potatoes. now its brown like a mountain.

  • for the lava:

  • in a bowl using a beater whip the whipping cream until thick and fluffy.
  • Step 15
  • add the shredded cheddar and fold in.
  • Step 16
  • add the food coloring until its a dark pink. carefully mix it in.
  • Step 17
  • pour the lava mixture into the center of potatoes in the hole you made . make it a heaping pile going up.
  • Step 18
  • place volcano into oven for 20 minutes.
  • Step 19
  • your lava will bubble and flow down the sides. fun to watch while its cooking!
  • Step 20
  • remove from oven and serve while hot!
  • Step 21
  • brightens up your finger and makes it fun for kids! kids can help placing bacon on and filling it with lava!
  • Step 22
  • tip, you can add any flavor to your potatoes before assembly.. garlic, more cheese, etc, as long add the potatoes remain thick enough to mold.. :)
